Head of Department: Alia Al-Sabi
The Department of Graphic Optimism offers a two-tier approach to understanding the culture of visual representation and production prevalent during the UAE’s formation. The exhibition surveys visual trends and cues that were in circulation in print, in newspapers, and in media during the 1970s and 80s, showing how these trends were a product of a vibrant cultural and intellectual exchange connected with the flow of migration to the Gulf. The Department of Graphic Optimism also showcases work drawn from the graphic design archive of Hisham Al Madhloum from the 1980s and 90s. Al Madhloum is a graphic designer who has also worked as an administrator in many arts and cultural institutions. He represents a unique, creative moment in the early days of the UAE, in which artists, poets, illustrators, writers, and designers were tasked with shaping the cultural psyche of a budding nation.
