An illustration from The Strange Encounter series, The Avatars are hybrid creatures, mongrels, mutations, or combinations of strangers that depict negotiated forms of their prescribed representations. In this Avatar, Superman’s iconic ‘S’ in the
diamond shape on his chest, his red cape,
and blue and red costume suggest his more-than-human powers. He also wears pearl necklaces, jewels, and a green silk fabric wrapped around his waist. He has animal-like features that resemble those of the Hindu God Hanuman. The Avatars force their viewers to negotiate juxtaposed identities, asking questions about their configuration
and relationships.
