Speaking Volumes is an ongoing, hybrid research project about feminist publishing practices between art and activism. Aiming to fill a gap in the history of artist’s publications, this research takes different forms, from graphic documents to performative events. For this occasion, the project materializes in the form of a display inspired by Alison Knowles’s artwork The Big Book — a giant structure with oversized pages created in 1966 — and includes original paintings by artist Laurie Charles. The installation for the Department of Non-Binaries specifically addresses feminist publishing in relation to questions of space, scale, and design. With this focus, the installation shows how the reclaiming of alternative spaces is closely tied to political and physical conditions.
