Monstera Deliciosa
2018
Vinyl adhesive on foam board, plants, and wood base with three-dimensional collage
Taking its name from a tropical plant common to Brazil, Monstera Deliciosa is a three-dimensional collage built on-site by the artist over the course of one week. The work, whose name translates to ‘delicious monster’, combines found visual material from magazines with living plants. Different from each angle of observation, the living sculpture unfolds in multiple layers as visitors move around it. With this work, Eichner — who has been working for many years as a magazine illustrator — pulls images produced for mainstream media and a plant popular in interior decorating out of their usual roles as mass market goods. By bringing them into a unique spatial coexistence, they can be studied and appreciated as a complex environmental experience.
