Independent Magazines
The establishment of various independently-run magazines such as Al-Azmenah Al-Arabiyyah and Al-Ahly was a keystone of cultural production in the first two decades of the UAE’s foundation. Through cutting-edge coverage of local issues as well as socio-political commentary on major regional matters, these magazines reflect the critical culture prevalent at the time as well as the level of investigative reporting that sought to track the changes taking place on the ground after the union. These magazines stand out for their graphic techniques, such as collaging, and the incorporation of painting to illustrate a variety of thematic issues like unemployment
or tourism in the UAE.
