Focusing on one artwork and its absence, Public Fiction stages a compact, multilayered exhibition program. Michael In Black (2018) by artist Nicole Miller consists of a bronze cast of Michael Jackson’s kneeling body. Absent from the exhibition, this talismanic object functions as a vehicle to consider contemporary concerns through the lens of pop music. Two new laser works by Miller invoke the sculpture’s original form and accompany an in-progress publication with writing by Jared Sexton and Negar Azimi, the subject of a special performance-lecture on November 12.
