Census of Hybrid Designers and
Other Non-Binary Practitioners

The easily-identifiable graphic designer is a nearly-extinct species. Terms such as ‘hybrid’, ‘multidisciplinary’, or ‘non-binary’ might more aptly describe a growing number of creative practitioners today. Given the choice, such practitioners might want to classify themselves as neither one nor the other. Yet, society often expects us to be clear about who we are and what we do. Many bureaucratic systems that seek to define the discipline and profession of graphic design do not make room for the unconventional, leaving only the option to self-identify as ‘none of the above’. The form on this wall seeks to initiate a Census of Hybrid Designers and Other Non-Binary Practitioners that embraces the neither-nor and the in-between. This conceptual Census invites its viewers to defy clear categories and to encourage miscellaneous, multiple activities that form new ways of addressing identity.
