This research project provides insight into the mindset of people who voted in the 1975 and the 2016 referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union. Tracing their decisions, personal situations, and reasons, the project focuses on what has changed during the forty-one years that the UK was part of the EU to make people want to leave. Those who wanted to remain in the EU tended to blame the Northern parts of the country and the poorer demographics of society for why the vote passed. Additionally, statistics showed that less educated and older people were more likely to vote to leave. The situation, however, is not that simple. Brexit: Why did it happen? explores the complexities that appear when scratching the surface.
