A Writing Revolution: Shifts in Graphic Design Culture

When observing the current landscape of graphic design academia, it appears to be saturated with Western Ideologies and historical references. The deficiency of critical writing about the discipline in the Middle East, and the underrepresentation of protagonists and present day scholars, is depriving us from dialogue. Young graphic designers are embracing the dogmas of the West, appropriating and subverting them to their own ends, rather than referring to contextual resources. Consequently, the term graphic design continues to feel foreign to a larger public in the region, as it seems to be inherited from other cultures. This talk emphasises on the urgency of shaping an environment that both stimulates and supports the graphic design discourse regionally.
